Developing STEM talent

Portals is committed to developing STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematical) talent and is proud to have both an apprentice and undergraduate placement scheme.

Our undergraduate placement scheme, currently in operation in our Technical Services department, gives University students the opportunity to undertake a 1 year industrial placement within Portals as part of their degree.

In contrast our apprenticeship scheme, currently running at both our Overton and Bathford Mills, provides the opportunity for young talent to work towards a L3 NVQ and HNC in Engineering, through a combination of college based study and on-the-job training over 5 years.

Our current apprentices joined the scheme in 2017 and, having already successfully completed their first year of study at college, they have now joined us on-site as Mechanical Apprentices.

Our apprentices shared; “We’ve had the opportunity to expand our knowledge, whilst also getting first-hand experience of using the mechanical tools and machinery.”

Matt Weaver, Director of Manufacturing, commented; “Our apprentices have brought energy and enthusiasm to our business. We’re fortunate enough to have a huge amount of experience in our business and are proud to be able to share this knowledge through our apprenticeship scheme. Our apprentices are also a critical part of our future strategy – the value apprentices can add should not be underestimated.”
